Tired of snow? Now that it’s Spring, thoughts turn to tulips. This purple tulip reminds me of a crocus too. Honestly, I’ve never been a huge tulip fan, partly because you need to plant so many to achieve a reasonable outdoor presentation. Especially if you’re always stealing flowers for inside.So, we finished a new garden end of summer last year just in time to plant bulbs. And plant them I did. 
The dirt was scaring me in its bare mess. I LITTERED the empty beds with bulbs of all kinds. One challenge with planting bulbs is that you really have to pay attention to when they bloom. And, you’re putting together colors, size, and timing. It can get complicated. I’m not the only one who finds bulbs difficult. Tulips, they say, have driven some mad. Perhaps a little history of tulips might add context.
Long story short. Watch when they come up and record it. When autumn rolls around, it will be most helpful in augmenting your supply. I invested in a lot of the small grape hyacinth and various daffodils because they multiply. 
They’ll help fill in bare spaces over time.
We bought some antique gates from Executive Antiques in Albany for the garden but the need for a front deck handrail was a special case requiring a very specific design to address look and safety. Had to be new. We’re thrilled- it only took us a few years to figure it out -once we agreed we had to do it. Now, in addition to it’s being safe, it truly passes muster. It looks like it’s always been there.
If you think you’ll ever have need of iron gates, go now. Executive is closing its doors for retirement and April 1 is the big sale day. We’re headed back to pick up the single gate that wouldn’t fit my car. So, we’re taking the truck- very dangerous.
