We’ve had gloriously warm days to put the gardens to bed. Best continue before the weather turns. Besides, digging in the dirt is good for the soul. I’ve been doing it all my life. From the time I was little we were outside in the dirt almost every day, raking leaves, planting flowers, riding our bikes, building forts in the woods.

You too, can start getting happy now. I saw an interesting read on the subject posted by a soil scientist friend of mine. It appears that digging in dirt is scientifically good for the soul. (And if science says it well..I wear gloves just the same.) Antidepressant Microbes In Soil: How Dirt Makes You Happy.

                                           Burlap Boxwood Helmuts

Fall

                            Hakaro Nishiki

I took advantage of the warm day on Sunday and raked and treated the azaleas with Hollytone. Happily, my   daughter helped me give the new little boxwoods their cute winter burlap hats. I wasn’t sure but decided to go all the way.  Number one on winter protection is watering. I plan to soak the bushes every couple weeks till the big freeze. Meantime, the burlap should protect them from wind and sun damage. Fingers crossed. I just planted a beautiful bush I’ve always wanted, a June blooming Japanese Willow- Hakaro Nishiki. Left of the big stone. White, green and pink leaves -very festive.  I put in a bunch of Siberian Iris that have been soaking for several days. Wish me luck.

At the end of the day, I was thrilled to look around – we did good. Bulbs in. Mulch down. Bushes covered. Well, still got a few leaves to rake and hydrangea leaves to cut. I decided to take a walk around for you. You’ll be happy I know my limits. I chose NOT to provide you with audio. fallyard2016

Mumford & Sons is an English rock band from London, formed in 2007, that’s won numerous Grammys including best British album in 2011; performing here together with Declan Patrick MacManus, aka Elvis Costello, an all-around music phenom.

The Ghost of Tom Joad, written by Bruce Springsteen, was penned as the voice of the hopeless and disenfranchised. Anything is possible in collaboration. It’s been embellished from the original in this version. Collaboration is very much the watchword for Mumford & Sons. They talk about it here. Their members hale from all over the continent and they appear to have a good time together making music other people enjoy. What a concept. More music.
