This photo will always remind me of my Papa. Back when smoking was in vogue- we had several ceramic ashtrays he’d made in the shape of birds. Hard to imagine that today. Birds were creatures he always enjoyed watching and I remember him being fascinated by seagulls at the beach. These little birds have big personalities just standing still.  Aren’t they funny?

It was then I fell in love with Luciano Pavarotti- even though I never saw him perform. I think some will recognize the music -which has been used several times in movies. It will always bring me comfort and good memories of my father (and Saturday afternoon with the MET permeating the house.)

Here too, is the translation- (hopelessly romantic in the grand Italian tradition) – Is it the words, or the man singing it? I’d go with the latter.

The title is Nessun Dorma- Nobody Shall Sleep:

“Nobody shall sleep!…
Nobody shall sleep!
Even you, o Princess,
in your cold room,
watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know…
No!…No!…
On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!…
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!”
